The UGC sponsored Two Days Workshop on ‘Recent Trends in Professional Social Work- Service, Training and Research’ was inaugurated on the 25th September 2014.  Dr. Philomena D’ Souza, Director, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya; Dr. K. Sekar, President, ISPSW; Dr. Rameela, Dean, PG Department & Dr. Laxminarayan Bhat, Registrar,  School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya shared the Dias. Dr Rameela Shekhar welcomed the gathering and highlighted the rationale for this seminar , She highlighted that inspite of  the fact that field work is an Intergral part of the Social Work profession , there is still a wide gap in the practice. The Inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Philomena D’ Souza. Dr. D’Souza threw light on the trends in Professional Social Work. She explained how the Profession originated from field work. However, today as far as the course is concerned, students’ training in field work practicum is poor.  In addition to this, by pointing out the disproportionate student supervisor ratio and lack of structured field work/ supervision she conveyed the message to enhance the quality of the Profession and the course by working on the aforementioned issues.

Dr. Sekar in his Key Note Address brought to fore as to how the globalization has brought about changes in Social Work Education. His address strongly brought out the lacunae in Social Work Education, Field Work Practicum (in terms of placement on students and the process followed), Process of Supervision (due to disproportionate supervisor- student ratio) and in the knowledge, skills and commitment of the Academicians. He also explained the attempts made by the Professionals to develop the Profession through numerous ways with networking being the major one. He concluded with a clear note  to make the Profession stronger and well established.
