As a part of the curriculum, the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science had organised an exposure visit to the District Armed Reserve (DAR), Dakshina Kannada District Police at Pandeshwar, Mangaluru on 12th October 2022 at 10am for both first and second year students of the department accompanied by three faculties Mr. Roshan D’Souza, Mr. Joel Joseph and Mr. Niketh P. S.

The students were exposed to the two wings of DAR such as Dog Squad and Armoury. Mr. Dinesh, Armed Head Constable, explained about the functions of Dog Squad, it’s importance in explosive and narcotics cases. The dogs are trained for a period of 6 months at National Training Centre for dogs in Bengaluru and then assigned for duty in various places. There was demonstration on identification of drugs and explosives by Dog. The students also got an opportunity to interact with trainer and could see Labrador retriever Jhansi who has been working for the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate since 2015 involved in detecting several cases.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Further, Mr. Chandu, Armed Head Constable provided exposure to various arms and ammunitions. Arms such as service weapon, sub-machine gun, 7.62mm SLR, 5.56mm INSAS, AK-47, 12 bore pump action gun, pistol, .303 anti-riot gun and tear gas gun were explained in detail along with the mechanism, working and function of each weapon. Various bullets, cartridges, pellets, tear gas grenade, dye marker grenade were shown and information regarding its composition was discussed. Queries put forth by students were answered in relation to the functions of DAR. Students expressed that the practical exposure about the various arms and ammunitions and functions of Dog squad was very informative. They could gain first-hand knowledge about the functions of DAR in general. The visit concluded at 11:30am with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Rashmi Shenoy, second year student of MSc CFS, Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice specialization. Altogether, 36 students, three faculties of the department and Four Police personnel were present during the interaction.
