The International Conference on the Impact of Globalization on India and Europe –with specific focus on Social Work was held in the Maria Paiva Hall at School of Social Work, Roahni Inlays , Mangalore on the 24th of July 2019. It began with a prayer song followed by Bharathanatiyam, a dance which depicted the culture of Bharth.  Professor. Meena Monteiro, the Dean of the Department of MSW welcomed the guests, speakers and participants. The well set inauguration was done by the dignitaries and the student representatives by lighting the lamp.

Dr. Jenis Mary, the Vice Principal delivered tthe keynote address highlighting the impact of globalisation in and around the world. She opined that the local issue has now become a global issue and global has swallowed the local for its benefits. Globalisation has changed the way people think, live and act. Finally, she ignited the minds of participants to participate and critically analyse the concept of globalsation.

 

 

 

 

The Principal, Ms. Juliet C.J. delivered the Presidential Address by highlighting the impact of globalisation in the world. The global contexts and the invisibility of the global world had to be considered while social work is being practised. Finally, she thanked all those who made this International seminar a reality at Roshni Nilaya.

Professor Joselyn Lobo in charge of International Partnership in Social Work Practice mentioned how fieldwork had formed the students of PG and UG in viewing the world differently. He stressed that collaboration with some foreign Universities does have an effect on our thinking and social work practice. Some of the foreign Students do come over here for block placement and go back with a fruitful social work experience. He urged the students to have international linkages in social work while we practice.


Session I: Professor. Prakash Goossens (11 am -1pm )
Dr Prakash explained the concept of Globalization through an analogy of how Princess Diana died. He said that globalization profoundly affects the social work practices in India and Europe.  The World Map (Different continental maps), graph depicting trends in globalization, deaths due to air pollution in different countries, the existence of religious denomination worldwide and also religious tolerance in several countries, changing family attitudes with regards to same sex marriage, religion and Globalization were the issues were discussed and invited all to reflect and critically analyze the impact of globalization.
 
He further highlighted the trends of globalization such as scarcity of water, corruption index worldwide, worldwide internet usage, global terrorism- ISIS, gender and globalization, globalization and mental health (no health without mental health), refugees and globalization, and human trafficking & forced labour, His pictorial presentation depicting the regions conquered by the British called Commonwealth of Nations, another map depicting how the American empire showing Americans and British influenced in making English the most common language through colonializtion.

In contrast the above views, Belgium respected their own language and dint focus on English.

It has its geography, demography, GDP and languages. He briefed about India’s friendship with Belgium and how Europe should be compared with India for fair comparison. He pointed out how most globalized countries such as Switzerland and Belgium are the 2 richest countries in Europe. Finally he concluded by raising a question whether globalization should be included in social work curriculum?
 
(Afternoon session began with Sister Precilla (II MSW) introducing the resource person for the afternoon, Dr. Amitabh Anand (Assistat professor @ Academy of Digitalizaton SKEMA Business School) and handed over the mike to him.

Session: II Dr. Amitabh Anand (2 PM- 4:15 PM)
Dr. Amitabh Anand spoke about some of his personal life experiences. He said history witnessed 3 phases of globalization.

  • Phase One (2,000 BC – 1400): The Spread of Trade
  • Phase Two (1400-1947): Discovery and Expansion.
  • Phase Three (1947- Present)

He termed globalization as a “Boundryless and Borderless World” having different dimensions of globalization. Industrial globalization, Financial globalization, Economic globalization, Political globalization, Information globalization, Cultural globalization

He gave an example of Estonia, a small country with less population had been the most powerful defense network country in the world. He cited Israel for the best in defense technologies against hacks. Global technology trends and globalization has had impacted technological world. Technology has made things much easier but it has removed so many jobs from the market. The role of a social worker in globalization of technology is to help people see the good and bad of technological advancement. Automation and technology cannot replace humans completely
Valedictory (4:30p.m.) Dr. Rita Noronha gave the concluding remarks and critiqued the sessions and invited all to see the real impact of globalization. She urged us to question the existing globalized world with a view of development at the cost of poor.  Ms. Eveleen Benis the President of the closing program summarized the sessions and thanked all for making this International conference happen.
