The department of BSW school of social work Roshni Nilaya organized a work shop on RTI(right to information) The Undergraduate students of SSW Roshni Nilaya experienced the enriching opportunity tolearn about the RTI Act and its great significance under the guidance of Mr. Benedict Kristo Fernandez. Mr. Benedict is an RTI activist well versed in fighting for the various needs and rights of society. The session on 15th May 2023 commenced with a small word of prayer followed by the brief introduction of Mr. Benedict Kristo Fernandez and how the blooming environment of Mangalore has benefited from his works and initiatives. When Mr. Benedict took over the stage, he succeeded in breaking down the RTI Act into very simple terms. He provided a brief idea of its origin and the various sections it comes under. But most importantly he briefed the students on how a simple appeal filed on the basis of RTI could make our surroundings so much more peaceful to live in, especially when we take the initiative to demand the information for ourselves and play a role of looking into the matter personally. To ease their understanding of this vital topic, he provided them with a practical situation which concerns the receivable of information of an answer paper leak involving multiple educational officers that were situated both in the examination hall and the paper correction chamber. He compelled the students to ponder over whom to address on this issue and execute a written appeal through RTI. In between the session a notice on Climate Awareness was passed around in which the students had to sign their initials. The session on an overall point of view was very informative. Even those who were already previously aware about RTI still learnt about the extent of power the Right allows to an individual. Mr. Fernandez made the students think about all the issues of the society that wouldn't seem to affect anyone at first glance but in reality is just as much everyone's problem as it is of the environment. The session came to an end with a vote of thanks delivered by a student on behalf of the college. A total of 131 students participated in the workshop.
