As a part of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Criminology, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru and Father Muller Medical College, Mangaluru, Karnataka Students of III BA Criminology Visited department of Forensic medicine and Toxicology, Father Muller Medical College on Monday, August 23, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Dr. Hareesh Gouda, Associate Professor delivered a comprehensive lecture on forensic jurisprudence .The class aimed to provide students with a foundational understanding of the intersection between forensic science and the legal system.

Session Highlights:
Definition and Scope: Dr. Harish initiated the lecture by defining forensic jurisprudence as the application of legal principles within the context of forensic science. Students were explained about the Medical Council of India, its functions, privileges of medical practitioners, duties of physicians towards the state and society, duties towards patients, professional misconduct, consent in medical practice, compulsory medical examination, and consent in special circumstances.

Historical Perspective: The class delved into the historical development of forensic jurisprudence, highlighting landmark cases and the contributions of pioneering forensic scientists. This historical context helped students appreciate the evolution of forensic science and its importance in modern criminology.

Legal Framework: Dr. Harish explained the legal framework underpinning forensic investigations. This included an overview of relevant laws and regulations.

Evidence Admissibility: One of the central topics covered was the admissibility of forensic evidence in court. Dr. Harish also emphasised the need for scientific rigour and reliability when presenting forensic findings as evidence.

Expert Witnesses: Students gained insight into the role of expert witnesses in forensic jurisprudence. Dr. Harish also explained how forensic experts are selected, qualified, and cross-examined during legal proceedings, emphasising the importance of impartiality and credibility.

Case Studies:To reinforce the theoretical concepts discussed, the class analysed several real-world case studies where forensic evidence played a pivotal role in solving crimes. This practical application helped students connect theory to practice. Ethical Considerations: Ethical dilemmas in forensic jurisprudence were explored, including issues related to the handling of evidence, bias, and the potential consequences of wrongful convictions.

Dr. Harish's class on forensic jurisprudence provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationship between forensic science and the legal system. The session equipped students with valuable insights into the challenges and responsibilities associated with the use of forensic evidence in criminal justice.
