The Center for Extension Services (CES), Anti-Human Trafficking Club (AHTC), The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru in collaboration with International Justice Mission, Bengaluru had organized an awareness and training sessions on the theme “Student’s Responsibility in Prevention of Human Trafficking” held on 5th May 2022 at 1.30pm in Maria Paiva Hall of the College.

Mrs. Praisey Glory Bai, Lead for Survivour Advocacy and Rehabilitation, International Justice Mission (IJM), Bengaluru was the Resource Person. The discussion started with an animated video about the victim of human trafficking, conceptual note on various forms of Human trafficking, laws pertaining to the Act and extent of Human Trafficking in and around the state of Karnataka. It is an alarming to know that Karnataka State stands third position in reporting human trafficking cases in India she said. The severity of the cases was discussed through various cases occurred in India. Further, she threw light on the introduction of AHTC in various Universities and Colleges in India, its objectives focusing more on the prevention of human trafficking, suggested activities for the club for creating awareness and expected outcomes were also provided. The session ended with a short documentary video of Kumar, a rescued victim of bonded labor followed by answers to the queries put forth by the audience.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mr. Shabin John, Senior Associate, International Justice Mission addressed about various helplines that are existing in the districts, its role and responsibilities at the time of need. He appealed the young student community to support the organization to fight against the evil of Human trafficking in the society. Ms. Shobha D’Souza, Assistant Professor of Social Work, Member of Child Welfare Committee and AHTC Core committee shared her views about the role played by the governmental organizations to help the needy and they seek support from the student community to inform about any issues related to the child.

Dr. Juliet C.J. Principal, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru addressed the gathering stating the importance of AHTC which is need of the hour. Whenever students are involved in the field oriented learning such as internships, block placement, field work etc., can provided services to the organizations working for the issues related to the women and children she said. She appreciated the students of the college who recently helped a victim in need at night aided to reach home safely. Being in the society, the problems may arise at any moment, it’s the responsibility of each one to reach out to our fellow mates she said.

Dr. Saritha D’souza, Head of the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science cum Director, Centre for Extension Services (CES) gave an introductory note about the establishment of AHTC in the college. The student community has the collective power to drive change, to be the eyes and ears of the society. AHTC will focus on to generate public awareness and build a sustainable student-led movement against Human Trafficking. It has the potential to be a vibrant and powerful voice to build a nation free of such exploitation. In this context, the members of the club will actively participate with Law Enforcement Agencies and other relevant organizations to extend assistance to victims. In this process 101 students of the college have volunteered to work towards it she said.

The second session was exclusively focused for the members of AHTC, providing insight into the interventions related to the issues of Human trafficking. Action plan of the future activities were discussed along with the volunteers of International Justice Mission. Some of the suggested plans are to create awareness among the school children and college students through relevant skit, poster/Essay/Collage/Slogan competitions, short films etc., Post in social media such as Instagram, whats app, facebook, Researches on relevant fields etc. Collaboration with relevant agencies like, Police, local Governmental and Non-Governmental organizations, Child and Women Development Department, Child line etc. conduction of seminars, workshops, conferences, street plays, maintenance of reports of each programme and follow-ups.

Dr. Jenis Mary, Vice-Principal of School of Social Work, Mangaluru cum Director, Centre for International Academic Network (CIAN), Prof. Cecelia Goveas, IQAC Coordinator, Dr. Jacita D’Souza, former principal of the college and Director of Family Service Agency, Mr. Roshan D’Souza, Asst. professor and Faculty coordinator of AHTC, Mr. Danush E., student coordinator of AHTC, Teaching and Non-teaching faculties of the college, undergraduate and Post Graduate students of the college were present on this occasion. Altogether, 200 participants were present during the session.

Dr. Kiran Prasad, Dean Administration cum Member Secretory of AHTC introduced the resource person, Ms. B. Chandana, Class Representative of Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice cum member of AHTC welcomed the gathering, Ms. Nayana B.R. President of Forensis Forum delivered the vote of thanks, Ms. Swapna Gowri, Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science compered the event.
