The Provincial of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary (India, Province South) Ms. Philomena D’sa visited the College. Along with Ms. Vida Sequeira, President of the Institute of Social Service, she addressed and heard the teaching fraternity from 10:15 am to 11:30 am in the Maria Paiva Hall on Thursday, March 18, 2021.

The College Anthem was sung. The Principal Dr. Juliet CJ welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering. She mentioned that the academic audit was viewed by the Provincial. She gave a brief input on the student enrolment across all programmes and value-added/short term courses. She expressed that the teachers have been doing really well particularly during pandemic times and completed the academic audit too.

Ms. Philomena D’sa congratulated the staff for their hard work and unstinted support to the Management. She called upon the fraternity to inform her about any initiatives of their departments.

Ms. Shalini Prabhu enthusiastically spoke about how she chartered Roshni Toast Masters Club on 20th January 2021 under Toastmasters International, a platform to develop leadership skills, effective communication, and public speaking skills. There are student members (MSW stream) as well as members who are working professionals and this gives a great balance in terms of perspectives and thought sharing process in the club. She mentioned that many students who had the fear of public speaking earlier have gained new confidence and are developing into able communicators.

IQAC Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Cecilia F. Goveas expressed how students were given special attention during the pandemic especially those who had network issues as the offline revision was taken by all the departments before the end semester examinations. A few alumni came forward and offered extra coaching to the slow learners to complete their backlog examinations. She mentioned that with good teamwork of the NAAC coordinator and criteria heads, the AQAR was successfully submitted in December 2020.

 

 

 

 

Dr Sebastin K.V mentioned that due to the COVID 19 restrictions imposed, it was difficult to send students for fieldwork. To give them practical exposure, practitioners in different functional areas were identified and online sessions were conducted. At the end of each session, relevant session tasks were assigned to students. The feedback and the reports submitted by the students revealed that they gained practical exposure in the respective areas.

Dr Sebastin voiced that to provide the first year MSW students with a wider outlook about the social work profession and education, a series of lectures from prominent professionals across the world were conducted. The feedback received from the students was good.

Asst. Prof. Eveleen Benis mentioned that as a part of the Post Graduate Diploma in Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) where students need to undergo 60 hours of internship, due to the pandemic situation they were also given practical online sessions from several experts working in CSR domain from prominent organizations.
Mr. Sandeep, Physical Education Director thanked the Management for imposing faith in his caliber. He mentioned that our College features in the third position in terms of sports ranking of Educational Institutions. He expressed that all relevant sports activities conducted as well as students’ participation at various Tournaments have been meticulously prepared and also features on the College website.

Dr. Sandra Lobo thanked the Management for working tirelessly and obtaining the Minority Certificate for the College, for investing in Internet connectivity in the campus, for refurbishing Rooms 4, 5 and 6 of the BA block, for ensuring a documentation room, and appointing documentation in charge. She mentioned that several webinars were conducted with the support of the Management.

Dr. Sandra Lobo spelled out that the Resource Mobilization Committee that was formed as an offshoot of SAMVADA needs to be revived such that teachers and all employees are given a good salary hike. She stressed that a good bonus could be given if not for all, at least to those who have been working diligently in various capabilities, stressing that monetary benefits were equally important besides the good psychological climate and camaraderie shared in the campus.

Dr. Keshava Gowda U spoke about skill-oriented topics such as news report writing, anchoring included in the Hindi syllabi for both the undergraduate programmes. Besides, relevant movies are screened if they form the subject matter of the prose in the syllabus. This makes learning enjoyable. He expressed that both students and their parents have given good feedback.

Asst. Prof. Rosa Mathew, Head of the Department of Counselling addressed the initiative taken by the department of counselling to conduct series of workshops/seminars in the academic year 2020- 2021. The department was successful in conducting 3 workshops (one national, one International, and one regional level) and an International seminar. The department trained students to take up the online group and individual counselling. During the pandemic, the faculty and students provided counselling services in institutions in and around Mangalore. They were able to prevent suicides and break the drug chain and addiction in two Institutions (No mention made, confidential). Family enrichment and sexuality education programmes were conducted to class X students around Mangaluru city.

Dr. Saritha D’Souza spoke about the first-ever commencement of offline classes for Criminology and Forensic Science practical (due to pandemic) based on the specialization chosen by the students in their second year and completed the portion in December 2020. She mentioned that 10 batches of students have completed the MSc CFS programme and that the alumni intend to form an Alumni Association- CFS chapter. She expressed the need for the setup of a well-equipped laboratory to cater to the needs of students. A final draft of the proposal for up-gradation of Forensic Science Laboratory with 3 divisions- Cyber Forensics, Biology laboratory and Forensic Questioned Document Laboratory has been forwarded to the Principal.

Asst. Prof. Sarik Ankitha, Head, Department of Criminology mentioned that in collaboration with the Traffic South Police Station, students organized a street play on the occasion of Traffic Awareness Week which was much appreciated by the general public.

Ms. Philomena D’Sa lauded the dedicated service of all the teachers. She was happy that teachers were making concerted efforts to connect the syllabi and related them to life. She assured that the Management would look into the matter of resource mobilization, revive the Committee and do the needful. The short programme was compered by Ms. Shalini Prabhu from the MSW department.

After a tea break, Ms. Philomena D’sa met the administrative and ministerial staff. All the employees introduced themselves. Ms. Philomena D’sa appreciated the services and commitment towards their job roles and cooperation extended towards the well-being of the institution. In her message, she requested all the staff members to be focused on the mission, vision and goals of the esteemed institution.
