The Department of Psychology organized a day’s Field-based Exposure visit to the following places on Saturday, May 27th 2023.

1.Manipal Museum of Anatomy and Pathology Museum, MAHE, Manipal

The students were astounded to see sprawling sections such as Anatomy, Pathology, life-style related diseases, etc. A vast display of specimens, crafted models and charts augmented the learning experience. A section that caught the attention of students was the teratology section where specimens of various developmental anomalies in developing foetus such as spina bifida, anencephaly, etc were preserved.

2.Hombelaku Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre, a unit of Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal

The clinical psychologist Ms Samyukta and Dr. Shaurya (case manager) oriented the students that the centre provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care for its residents (they are not addressed as patients) from a team of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers, psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists and vocational trainers. Various programmes chalked out for the residents, pharmacological treatment, besides psychosocial treatment regimens like Exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Social skills training (a type of behavioural therapy) were well outlined. The queries of the students were adequately answered and they visited the male and female wings, recreation area, nurse’s station etc.

3.Hindocare (India) Pvt. Ltd, Industrial Area, Belapu, Udupi

Mr Roshan, Head of Operations & Purchase engaged in informative dialogue with the students during the visit to both its soap and toothpaste manufacturing units. From seeing soap noodles to massive machinery, manpower and mechanized products of soaps & toothpaste including wrapping and packing sections, the visit helped to understand industry-specific workings, brought clarity to important OB concepts, assisted to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical learning in a real-life environment. The visit enabled the students to identify their prospective area of work- entrepreneurial venture, HR-related matters, marketing, administration, logistics etc. This maiden visit for students was the first ever permitted by Hindocare (India) Pvt. Ltd to any Educational Institution.
Diversity, inclusion and sustainability were the take home messages for students who had a less instructive yet short-term experiential education. A total of 34 final-year students of Psychology were accompanied by Dr. Sandra Sunitha Lobo and Asst. Prof. Roshini Monica Goveas.
