The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science had organized ‘A Recreation and Crime Preventive Programme’ in the District Prison, Kodialbail, Mangaluru on 27th May, 2023 at 10:00am by the second-year students of both the specializations i.e., Questioned Documents and Impression Evidences (QDIE) & Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice (FPCJ).

The objectives are to interact with the prison officials, to understand the functions of district prison and to give recreation and crime preventive programmes for the inmates. The program began with a prayer song. The superintendent of prison addressed the gathering. He spoke about rehabilitation and the role of society in contributing to controlling crimes. In the District prison the accused are held only for a period of 6 months and then if convicted sent to the nearest central prison. The capacity of the prison is 250 inmates however currently there are 374 inmates of which 8 are females he said. The prison also consisted of a small library. The families of inmates can visit once a month by phone and they also have facilities of e-mulakat.

Further, students performed a flashmob on the theme prevention of crimes. An interactive activity was held for the inmates followed by a session on a prisoner’s life story held by Ms. Likhitha V. K. students of second year MSc CFS Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice specialization. She also stated that the inmates should not lose hope instead should be confident and reform to be better persons in the society. Sri. B. T. Obaleshappa, Superintendent of District Prison, Mangaluru appreciated the students and the faculties for organizing an informative programme for the inmates. He also expressed his wish to have many more collaborative programmes in future as well. As a part of academic curriculum, the students were also taken around the prison premises and garden maintained by the prisoners to learn the structure of district prison.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ms. Saumya, Advocate of District Legal Service Authority, Assistant Professors Mr. Niketh P.S Faculty Coordinator of Forensic Forum and Mrs. Amritha G Shetty, Faculty Extension Coordinator from the Department of MSc Criminology and Forensic Science of the college were present during the programme. The program concluded at 2.00pm with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Kavya Poojari, student of MSc CFS. Ms.Vibha and Ms. Nandita compared the whole event. Altogether, 22 students, two faculties of the department, three staff of the prison and around 45 under-trial inmates were part of this programme.
