As a part of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru and the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Yenepoya Medical College, Yenepoya University (deemed to be), Deralakatte, Mangaluru, one-day exposure in the Field of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology was organized for first year MSc Criminology and Forensic Science Students of our college at Yenepoya University campus on 30th May 2023 from 9.30 am to 5.00pm.

Dr. Kishore Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology gave a brief introduction about the department and introduced all the faculties. Later, the students got an opportunity to visit the museum of the department, Dr. Leena Pramod and Dr. Hashim gave the students a guided tour of the museum and explained the exhibits present like, Skeletons, poisons, toxins, weapons and the viscera samples.

Further, a session on ‘Forensic Anthropology’ was taken by Dr. Muhammed Nasir Ahmed, Assistant Professor of the department. Each student was provided with the set of skeletons and was taught how to identify the human skeletal remains, types of bones such as long bones, short bones, flat bone and irregular bones, determination of age and sex by examining the skeletal remains, skull identification and suture comparison, techniques of recovering the skeletal remains and determining the time since death.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At the end of the day there was a common interaction session held in order to answer the queries put forth by students on the session held on the topic of Forensic Anthropology. The students expressed that they could learn the subject matter well through practical exposure and by individually handling the specimens, especially human skeletal remains. Mr. Roshan D’Souza, Assistant Professor, Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Mangaluru, Dr. Vina Vaswani, Dr. Hashim, Dr. Alan George and three non-teaching faculties of Yenepoya University (deemed to be) were part of this programme. Ms Nashwa Iqbal, first year student of MSc Criminology and Forensic Science delivered the vote of thanks. Altogether, 18 students and 9 faculties were present on this occasion.
