With a history of just over two centuries, Economics is a relatively new discipline among the Social Sciences. With the publication of his famous book "The Wealth of Nations" in 1776, Adam Smith is considered as the Father of Economic Science, as he established it as a scientific discipline. Despite being a relatively new subject, Economics has reached a high level of perfection and has risen to the top of the academic hierarchy. Economics has acquired the position of the Queen of Social Sciences. The vitality of Economics is obvious from the fact that it is the only social science that has been awarded the Nobel Prize.
Economics plays a role in everyday life. Studying economics enables one to understand past, future and current models and apply them to societies, Governments, businesses and individuals. The BA degree programme offers Economics as one of the major subjects since 1970. The Economics course gives students an in-depth understanding of core economic theories, branches of applied interest, public finance, statistical methods and how to apply it to the real world. This enables them to have a deep understanding of how to create efficiency in today’s world. Students of Economics could build their careers in the fields of banking, finance, consultancy, government, business and teaching.
The Department of Economics tries to give experiential learning opportunities to students by way of arranging various activities. Besides, innovative methods like group discussions, debates, role play, seminars, quiz etc. are also used to enhance students’ participation in the classroom.
