Kannada Sangha was started in 1978 in a small way. The Sangha engages in activities that promote the state language and traditional Kannada literature.

Membership:  Annual membership fee is Rs. 15/-. For the second and final year students it is voluntary. At present there are 110 members. Three committees have been formed such as Wall magazine committee, Kannada Department Committee and Executive Committee for programmes.

Activities of the Sangha:
   

  1. Kannada Sangha organizes two types of activities – Inter-Class and Inter Collegiate level activities. Besides these there are programmes organized through   Mangalore University and the Cultural Department of government of Karnataka.
  2. With the collaboration of Kannada & Cultural Department six-day training in Administrative Kannada is organized by the Sangha for Karnataka Government Class II and III workers and officers from the different governmental departments. Dr. P.N. Maiya is the course director of this training.
  3. Another training programme is organizing Kannada Classes for Non-Kannadigas of School of Social Work . Spoken Kannada Certificate Programmes of 30 days’ duration used to be arranged by the members under the guidance of Dr. P. N. Maiya.
  4. In order to create a good taste for the traditional arts among the youth (especially college students) Kannada Sangha arranges inter collegiate folk variety programme every year and inter collegiate drama competition. 
  5. Creative writing is encouraged through Kannada Wall Magazine called “Sristi”.  To enhance traditional knowledge inter class Purana Quiz is conducted.   
  6. To promote reading habits Kannada Sangha initiated the activity of awarding books for the winners of the different competitions. Regarding this MoU has been signed with Athree Book Centre and as soon as results are declared book coupons will be issued to the students.  
  7. Kannada Sangha book bank caters to the needs of the poor students by lending them books. It creates an opportunity for those students who are well versed in local language such as Kannada and Tulu toadvance their linguistic skills.


Staff members and other donors contributed a cupboard to start aDepartmental Library called “Kannada Kasturi” with  old text books donated by final year students.  In 1980 we have conducted a Hasyostva – An Inter collegiate competition as a fund raising programme for the departmental Library. Rev Fr.Edwin Walter donated one more cupboard to the department. At present we have 1300 books and the Kannada optional students run the library.  The Library is open on Wednesdays at 3.30 to 4.30.p.m and on Saturdays from 12.30 to 1.30.p.m. Students have benefited from this departmental library.
