On September 26, 2023, a workshop on "Gender Sensitization: Gender-Specific Socialization" was organised in the college's seminar hall from 2.30 pm. The workshop was organized by the Sociology Economics Forum in collaboration with Crimino Vision and the Women's Cell. The objective of the workshop was to shed light on the pervasive issue of gender-specific socialization and its profound influence on individuals' lives, particularly in the context of their career choices and self-identities.

The workshop commenced with a keynote address by Dr. Jenis Mary, Vice Principal of the college and Chairperson of the Women's Cell. Dr. Mary highlighted the importance of gender sensitization in today's context and pointed out that even the University Grants Commission (UGC) recognizes its significance by urging educational institutions to establish women's cells. She emphasized that gender sensitization plays a pivotal role in challenging traditional norms and stereotypes while promoting gender equality.

Dr. Audrey Pinto, Head of the Department of Psychology at Alva’s College, Moodbidri, served as the resource person for the workshop. Her engaging session involved an interactive activity where students were asked about their willingness to pursue different types of work. Notably, many students found themselves gravitating toward career choices traditionally associated with their gender, thus illustrating the pervasive nature of gender-specific socialization. Dr. Pinto delved into the origins of these stereotypes and how they take root in early childhood. She vividly illustrated how boys are often encouraged to embrace qualities like toughness and competitiveness, while girls are subtly expected to exhibit nurturing and empathetic traits. This socialization process begins early and continues throughout an individual's journey.

Dr. Pinto concluded her session with an empowering message. She emphasized that intelligence knows no gender boundaries and urged students to break free from societal constraints. In a modern context, she reassured them that they can aspire to any career path they choose, irrespective of their gender.

Throughout the workshop, students actively participated and engaged in thoughtful discussions with the resource person. They raised important questions, highlighting the impact of gender-specific socialization on their lives and choices.

The workshop concluded with Assoc. Prof Cecilia F Goveas, Head of the Department of Economics, expressing her gratitude and proposing a vote of thanks. The workshop left a lasting impact on the 82 students who attended, sparking discussions about future initiatives and events related to gender sensitization.

This workshop represents an important step toward fostering a more gender-sensitive and equitable society. It encourages students to challenge traditional gender norms and embrace a future without limitations based on gender. The insights and discussions from this event will serve as a catalyst for further efforts in promoting gender equality and raising awareness about the consequences of gender-specific socialization.
