Sparsh Counselling Center

"The logo symbolises the healing touch of human hands and the rising sun of new, hopeful beginnings"

Our students have the opportunity for closer interaction with their faculty and mentors through tutorials, field work conferences and practical sessions. This enables faculty to identify the problems faced by students. The faculty guide the student by herself or himself or refer the student to a counsellor.

Counselling helps individuals to understand one self realistically. It enables a student to understand his/her problem and overcome it through his/her effort with the help of a counsellor or an expert, who might also dialogue with the significant persons in the life of the student. Counselling also helps in total development of the student, facilitates the growth of his/her inner potentials and promotes a healthy connectedness with others in the institution. It is a valuable opportunity open to students wherein they learn to cope with the challenges of life as a whole, especially during times of turmoil and confusion so that they may grow in a healthy environment that ensures positive mental well-being.

To the Department of Psychology and its students, the inauguration of the Sparsh Counselling Centre was a milestone and a moment to cherish. This was a move towards putting to practice the theoretical knowledge. The students felt connected with the whole process of education through this venture. The inaugural was held on 28th June 2011 at 3.40 p.m. The logo of the Sparsh Counselling Centre symbolises the healing touch of human hands and the rising sun of new, hopeful beginnings.

Visit to Mangalore City Corporation

On 18/8/2018 Friday Along with Mr Kishor Athavar , Community Development and other specialization students went to visit’ MANGALORE CITY CORPORATION’ at Vamanjoor to learn about the technique of Waste Management. Here scholars observed the different stages of waste segregation in order to make manure. Here the segregation is done by machines called ‘REJECT CONVEYOR’. Through this process on 10%becomes manure the rest is decomposed in to land fills. Where the waste is dumped and then covered with soil.

We must think twice before waste anything .Segregation at Vamanjoor is a lot harder due to the quantity of waste. Need to find more environmental friendly solutions to protect our earth.

Presentation on ‘Soil Erosion in Ullal beach’ held for MSW students

Sep 19 : Students of MSW had a session with Ms.Karishma, M.A Sociology graduate from TISS University. Ms.Karishnma has done her internship on ‘Disaster Management’ conducting a study on the issue of ‘costal erosion in Ullal’ for the period of one and half month. She shared about her experiences of interaction with community people, local authorities and expressed her gratitude to School of social work Roshni Nilaya and Mr.Kishore Attavar, Director, Center for Extension Services, Roshni Nilaya for the guidance through out her study.

Talking about her findings of the study she explained that, costal erosion in Ullal is a hazard as only land and property has been lost so far and not yet a disaster, which looses lives. However steps needed to be taken to prevent it from becoming a disaster. As per her observation, people of Ullal community come under the low socio-economic profile. The people of the community are really concerned about the issue, but it is getting politicised and mired in corruption and proper impact study is not being made. They really want some assistance to deal with it.

Based on her study she made some recommendations saying, that there is a need for unity among people keeping aside socio-religious differences, which will help in meeting the issue strongly, Government should take an effective step to solve the issue, knowing the future consequences of it.

The session was really informative and an eye opener for many students, to understand about the severity of the issue and gave lots of inputs regarding the need of protecting our own nature and locality from future major disasters.

Report on Relief work at Vimala Bhavan, Gothuruth and Kottapuram Integrated Development  Society (KIDS) – Cleaning Work (Shramadan)
On 24th of August 2018 a group of 7 students from MSc Criminology and Forensic Science along with Dr. Wilsy Francis, Assistant Professor, M. Sc. in Counselling  left from Roshni Nillaya to Kerala to offer a helping hand with the relief work. The 8 member team were divided into 2 smaller groups and were each assigned a building. The floods, though only moderately affected the property, had severely damaged the furniture and other personal possessions. The first day involved displacing the damaged furniture and moving them onto the grounds where they were left to dry. The team managed to complete one building and began with the surroundings. On the 27th, the final day, while the girls continued to clean Vimala Bhavan, the boys helped out at KIDS relief camp.  By that afternoon all the inmates of the camp were sent home; and the boys helped out with the cleaning of the camp.

This experience was an eye opener for the entire group; it taught them the impermanence of material objects and that our life on this planet is short. In our short lives we come across grave circumstances and by lending a helping hand we hope to make our lives a little more meaningful. Another thing the trip has taught us is that even in the direst circumstances there is always hope when people come together in the name of humanity. We were lucky enough to experience our motto “Love is made fruitful in service” in real life, and we hope to continue to be the light in the lives of others.
