Congratulations to Padma Shri  awardee,  Dr. Sunitha Krishnan

 

Dr. Sunitha Krishnan(born 1972) a meritorious alumna pursued Medical and Psychiatric Social Work from 1985-87 and the first rank holder in MSW in Mangalore University.A social activist, she is the chief functionary and co-founder ofPrajwala, anon-governmental organizationthat rescues, rehabilitates and reintegrates sex-trafficked victims into the society.

 Ms. Krishnan works in the areas of anti-human trafficking, psychiatric rehabilitation and social policy. She has worked relentlessly to bring about a change in the attitude of India’s government for victim-friendly policies as well as awareness regardingsex trafficking, through political, legal and media advocacy.Her organization,Prajwala, has an international reputation and Ms. Krishnan is regularly consulted by the Indian authorities as well as theUnited Nationsand the US government.She has made it possible for Indian government and citizen’s organizations to work together on a range of protective and rehabilitative services for women and children who have been trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation.

She was awarded India's fourth highest civilian award thePadma Shrion 26thJanuary 2016 for her service to humanity. The Institute takes pride on the remarkable contribution of Dr. Sunitha.

To honour Dr. Sunitha, School of Social Work organised a felicitation programme on 3rd February 2016. Members of the Alumni Association of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya were a part of this proud moment. She addressed the Under graduate, post graduate students and staff .
