On the Occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking , the UG Department of Criminology, IQAC & Department of Physical Education of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya , Mangaluru in collaboration with Economic and Narcotic Crime Police Station, Mangaluru organised a webinar on "Role of Youth in curbing Drug menace" on 26 June 2021. The chief guest and keynote speaker for this webinar was Sri. Hariram Shankar, IPS, DCP (Law and Order), Mangaluru City Police and the guest speaker was Sri. Suhan Alva,Founder,Team Cause. The webinar began with a silent prayer and was hosted by Ms.Rose Tharakan. Ms. Sarik Ankita HOD of the Criminology Department welcomed the gathering and the guests. Ms.Juliet CJ in her presidential speech quoted Tommy Robbins `` It is in your moment's decision that your destiny shapes. " The keynote speaker of this webinar was Mr.Hariram Shankar IPS, DCP (Law and order), he graduated from the batch of 2016 and is a native of Thrissur, Kerala. He spoke about the different types of drugs commonly used such as ganja , LSD , MDMA pills , Synthetic drugs and how youth get into drugs due to reasons such as addiction , peer pressure , problems faced by youth and so on. He spoke about the steps taken by Mangalore Police to Curb the drug use in the city. He requested the students to not get into drugs as the law of the land deems it illegal and if arrested its repercussions ruin the youth life completely. On this note Mr.Hariram Shankar concluded his speech. The host then introduced the guest speaker Mr.Suhan Alva , a BA graduate from Aloysius. He is an anchor, event manager , youth activist , philanthropist working towards uplifting people , youth icon and a covid warrior. Mr.Alva spoke from a students perspective and addressed how a good percentage of youth have been addicted to drugs and how it destroys students lives. He spoke about the NDPS ACT and how if arrested the repercussions are going to affect the future of the individual. He gave an insight on Narco terrorism and also quoted that " smoking and alcohol are the gateway to drugs " .He spoke about our responsibility to individuals we know involved in drugs and raise our voice and help them get out of it and how drugs ruin lives. He concluded his speech by motivating us to come together as a whole and stand united to curb this trap and prevent our youth from going astray and ruining our lives. After the speech , a Q&A session was held towards the end where the students interacted with the guests. Ms.Juliet CJ took the pledge along with the students and faculty present in the webinar. The webinar concluded with Mrs. Farida Cecilia giving the vote of thanks. The webinar was very informative and helpful and also very interesting. It covered a lot of aspects on youth and drugs and was very educational. Mr. Mahesh prasad Police Inspector city crime branch and police officials of narcotics crime police station were present for the virtual session.
