‘Human Trafficking has taken different dimensions including online options in today’s technological society’ stated Mr Srinivas Gowda IPS, Assistant Superintendent of Police. He was inaugurating an International Seminar on the theme “Human Trafficking: Challenges & Responses” held in School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore on 10 December 2019.

The seminar was organised by the BSW (Bachelor of Social Work) Department and  Centre for International Partnerships in association with Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the college. The seminar coincided with the Human Rights Day observed world-wide on 10 December.

Social work students from Karnataka, Kerala and colleges under the jurisdiction of Mangalore University formed the bulk of the participants. The International delegates included students from Volda University, Norway as well as students from Germany, France, Italy and Sweden who are part of Field Services and Inter Cultural Learning.

 

 

Ms. Mungreiphy Shimray from Caritas India, New Delhi delivered a presentation on “Human Trafficking: History, Magnitude & Intervention” In the next session Mr. Emmanuel Angelo from Sanctuary-Training and Development Initiative, Vellore spoke about “Professional Response in addressing Human Trafficking” The final session included group discussions by student participants on Prevention of Human Trafficking through Field Practicum. The students suggested various ways and means to combat human trafficking at the individual and community level. The session was initiated by Dr. A J Christopher, Retired Professor from Tirupattur

The speakers highlighted that trafficking is a lucrative industry. It is second only to drug trafficking as the most profitable illegal industry in the world. Women and girls are vulnerable and together account for about 75%. India is considered as hub of this crime in Asia due to poverty and other factors. Strategies to tackle the issue through prevention, protection and prosecution were deliberated upon.  

Prof. Joselyn Lobo, Dean of BSW Department and Coordinator of International Partnerships welcomed the gathering and stressed the significance of the issue for social work profession.

Dr Juliet C J the Principal presided over the function while Dr Jenis Mary the Vice-Principal delivered the concept note on the theme of Human Trafficking. Ms Joshin D’Souza the student convenor delivered the vote of thanks.
