Language Lab: Skill Development Centre

The need to the development of the skill sets of students is imperative and the core principle of the education process. In today’s world, communication is the key to success at all levels. English Language Skill becomes necessary when we take into consideration the jobs available in most sectors. It also helps in building a person’s self image in this globalised environment.

The Language Lab was established in 2008. There are fifteen computer terminal and two software packages. Tense Buster is a menu driven, easy to use package which has five levels. Since it provides audio support as well it helps in building reading and listening skills. The second package which has teacher and student terminal is an ICT package which facilitates learning and testing.
Linguaphone: Intermediate English Course: Linguaphone Institute Limited, London. This Intermediate course is a design used for students with Basic English Language capabilities. This is used to build reading and spoken skills.

Keeping this in mind, the department has conducted skill development courses. It was in 2004 that a structured certificate course was started. Since then several batches of students have passed out. In 2008 we began the Homemakers batch for the certificate course in English in 2010 as an outreach programme for young mothers who came to the kindergarten. This concentrates on Spoken English and we have had three batches since.

Skill Development Programme is conducted for students with needy skills in English language. There are three levels and workshops are conducted alongside sessions in the lab and practical sessions as part of classroom teaching. Certificates are distributed at the end of the course which culminates in a written and viva-voce.
