The BSW Department, School Of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru organized a Webinar on “DISASTER AWARENESS” on 3rd June 2021. The Webinar was held on Google meet from 2:30 pm to 4:30pm. The resource persons of this Webinar were Mr. Rajkumar M, Mr. Mohana Shyam, Mr. Shashi Kumar R Mr. Prasad Babu K.N, Mr. Niranjan Hebbar, and Cap. V. K. Kadam, from the Sri Sathya Sai Disaster Management Team, Karnataka.

The Webinar began with a welcome address by Prof. Vineetha Rai, Head of BSW Department and Registrar (Evaluation) School Of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, who welcomed the dignitaries and introduced the resource person to the participants of the Webinar.

Mr. Rajkumar M took the first session of the webinar. He began with the introduction to disaster and explained the Types of Disaster. Then Mr. Mohana Shyam explained about the earthquake.

Mr.Shashi Kumar R covered the topic on Cyclone. He briefly explained the conditions required for a cyclone. Later Mr. Prasad Babu KN, spoke about Floods. He also spoke about the types, causes and positive sides of floods that can fertilize the land and recharge the groundwater. Mr. Niranjan Hebbar, took the session on tsunami and he explained about how tsunamis occur and the Tsunami of 2004 which affected India.

Then Mr. Rajkumar M covered the topic on landslide. He briefly explained about its effect and he said that the main cause for landslides is deforestation and we need to be aware about this problem and reduce cutting trees and go for afforestation. The last topic was covered by Capt. V.K Kadam on psycho social care during disaster. Psycho social care is a combination of emotional and social support and care methods. Social support can come only through building the community and our aim should be to bring the community together with this purpose.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Uthara Dinesh of I BSW. Prof. Vineetha Rai concluded the webinar by thanking the resource persons, the organizing committee and staff of BSW Department.
