Lit meet and Sociology- Economics Forum in association with The Inner wheel Club of Mangalore North organised a Seminar on the theme ‘Community Participation towards Orphan Free India ‘on Saturday August 31, 2019 from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm at Maria Paiva Hall. Around one hundred and fifty participants attended the Seminar. The President of Inner Wheel Club of Mangalore North, Mrs. Asha Naik welcomed the gathering .Convener of the Seminar Prof. Shobhana N. gave the curtain raiser. The Seminar was symbolically inaugurated by unfurling a painting of mother and child by the Principal of the College Prof. Juliet C.J. In her Inaugural address, she said that no one in this world should feel that they have no one. Everyone should be loved and cared for.

 

 

 

Smt. Kavitha Shashtri, former Governor, Lions Club International District was the Key note speaker and highlighted on the role of community in the care of orphans and called all social work organisations to come together and work on issues such as adoption.   Smt. Rathna Alva gave a gist of the area of work that she alongside other volunteers was engaged in Bagini Samaja, a home for destitutes for the past three decades. Mrs. Catherine Nirmala, Head of the Department of Commerce, Post Graduate Centre, St. Agnes College shared her experience as an adoptive parent alongside three biological children. She says it makes no difference at all and how they are more integrated spiritually, intellectually and emotionally because of her child. Miss Hitha Hejmady, Training Head of an Internet Service Provider firm, is a single mother of an adoptive child. She opined that adoption should be the first choice and not the last resort for those who can’t have biological children due to medical issues. All the speakers appreciated both Roshni Nilaya and the Innerwheel Club of Mangalore North for the Seminar on this topic and appreciated the work they have been doing in making a difference in people’s lives. Jyothi, a student of Roshni Nilaya II BSW shared her own experience of growing up in a home and was appreciated for her resilence and positive attitude. The Seminar ended with a question session which the speakers addressed. The participants were appreciative of the topic of the Seminar and many students said they would consider adoption as a choice which was heart warming.Prof. Cecilia Goveas, Co-convener rendered the Vote of Thanks. Rashmi Shenoy of II BA compered the programme.
