When our Writing becomes the Painting of our Voices - Workshop on Professional Writing Skills.

Five students of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, attended “SMART ART” (smart articulation), an International Workshop on Professional Writing Skills organised by the English department of St. Agnes college (Autonomous) Mangalore on 29th November, 2019. The Keynote Address was delivered by the Chief Guest Dr. Zita Lobo, RAK University. She stressed that observation, reading skills and innovation were the important techniques involved in professional writing. Sr. Dr. Jaswina AC, Principal, St. Agnes College, delivered the Presidential Address.

Ms. Sandhya Karnad, Communications Professional USA, former Manager of Documentation Cisco System, Bangalore, was the resource person for the first session of the workshop. She elaborated on the scope of Content Writing and Technical Writing and also gave tips on how we need to be prepared for job interviews in both these fields. The session was flavoured with group exercises based on technical communication. The session was very informative and effective.

Various papers were presented on the topics such as ‘Goals of Technical Writing’ and ‘Poetry as a therapy in Psychotherapy’. This was followed by a session on Creative Writing by Dr. Geralyn Pinto, St. Agnes Center for Post-Graduate Studies and Research. She enlightened the participants on how to write to the best of one's abilities and how reading wasa crucial part of being an Author. There were many exercises conducted that got the creative juices working.The Workshop was an enriching experience and a lot of ideas were imparted regarding the improvisation of writing skills. It was learnt that reading plays a crucial role in acquiring a good vocabulary and good communication skills and that words were powerful.
