It also has radar and cameras that provide clear images even after zooming in. We were then addressed by supervisor Ajay Soni Varma who briefed us about Dornier Aircraft used for coastal surveillance, maritime patrol, transport and rescue mission. Its radar could cover 220 miles on sea and detect people in this area, which is why it is often referred to as a “eyes and ears of the Indian Navy”. The officers were very informative regarding the aircrafts and their functions. There were a number of American aircrafts and fighter flights that were undergoing trials and the students were fortunate enough to see them take off several times. Students were then taken to the Air Traffic Control complex and also given a bird’s eye view of the runways and areas from the terrace. The functions of the ATC were explained.
