A Workshop on Grief Therapy was organised by the Department of M.Sc. Counselling, School of SocialWork, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore on the 29th of August 2019.. This event was a whole day long and was held in the Audio-Visual Room of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya. There were about 45 participants who came for the workshop.

The Workshop commenced with the arrival of participants and was followed by the Vice Principal Dr.Jenis Mary, Key Speaker Dr. Lavina Noronha and the Staff of M.Sc. Counselling. A Prayer Song was sung by the second year M.Sc. Counselling students followed by the lighting of the lamp by the guest of honour.
 
The MC for the day was Ms. Priyanka I.C. The Welcome Speech was given by Ms. Megha Manoj and there was an introductory speech about the speaker that was given by Ms.Surya Mohan. Dr.Jenis Mary in her keynote, addressed the gathering on how vital the knowledge of grief therapy can be  for the counsellor and  also highlighted on how the processing of grief could be good for a person.

 

 

 

 

 

The Formal Event concluded with the Vote of Thanks given by Ms. Fathima Rufeeda.

The Workshop began with Dr. Lavina Noronha speaking about grief. She said that grief was not limited to death alone, it could be the losing of a job, the sudden announcement of a divorce, break up in a romantic relationship, and so on.

The Speaker also spoke about the grieving period and Kubler Ross' five stages of grief. The Speaker addressed different kinds of grief such as anticipatory grief, acute grief, complicated grief, disenfranchised grief, traumatic grief and how to work with a traumatized grieving individual.

The Speaker described a few exercises such as a letter writing exercise, making a list exercise, photography exercise, grief journal, legacy exercise and retriggering exercise. The speaker spoke about 4 tasks of mourning and models to process it. Then the Speaker in brief explained about bereavement counselling, grief counselling, how to help people heal and the session ended with the Speaker saying when to get help from professionals.

At the end, a few questions asked by the participants were answered by the Speaker after which a few of the participants gave their feedback about the workshop.
