The Post graduate department of Social Work, Family Cosmos Forum organized a Webinar on 15th October, 2020 commemorating ‘World Mental Health day’ on the theme “Making Mental health a Priority”.
Dr. Avinash Shekhar, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist and Dr. Rameela Shekhar, Mental Health Professional, Manashanthi, Mangalore were the resource persons for this webinar.
Ms. Sneha of 2nd MSW welcomed, Principal Dr. Juliet C.J. and requested her to address the gathering. Dr. Juliet C.J. Principal of the college addressed the participants and gave her best wishes for the success of the webinar. Ms. Amberina of 2nd MSW introduced the speakers. Dr. Avinash Shekhar in his address highlighted with the use of statistics the extent to which people are suffering from mental illness and associated stigma. He gave a brief explanation on stigma related to schizophrenia and depression with the help of supportive international studies. He also mentioned about the new mental health act, the roles of social workers in different settings. He concluded by saying ‘Our mental health matters a lot when we work with patients of mental illness’.
Dr. Rameela Shekhar focused on ‘how to improve mental health of a mental health professional’. She highlighted about the components of mental health and also gave a brief explanation on improving mental health, self concept, managing and ventilating emotions, managing relationships, importance of social connections and the resources to improve mental health. She concluded by saying, ‘seek help whenever needed’. The webinar ended with Fr. Deepu proposing the vote of thanks.
