The students (7) of Sustainable Development Forum of Community Development specialization along with faculty (Ms Eveleen Benis, HoD and Anuradha Shetty, Asst prof.) visited Vandse Gram Panchayat, Kundapur on Tuesday, September 13, 2022. This GP has carved its own unique identity for its activities as a model local self government in the region. It has been active in taking up mass awareness programmes in areas of sanitation and village development activities; Vandse GP received the award for open defecation free GP in October 2nd 2015 and It was awarded the ‘Gandhi Grama Puraskar” in October2nd in 2016. The GP follows an integrated model of development with all the facilities/offices available at one central place.

The team of students visited Gram Panchayat office, Primary Health Centre, Solid and Liquid Resource Management Unit (SLRM), Sanjeevini Tailoring Unit and Government Higher Primary school to assess and study their functioning.

The first SLRM project of Karnataka was inaugurated in Vandse GP by the Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Priyanka Mary Francis on 16 September 2017. The Project aims to convert Udupi district into a garbage-free district. At present, SLRM unit collects, segregates and manages wastes from 7 neighboring Gram Panchayats with a Memorandum of Understanding.

The tailoring unit has trained many young girls and women in and around the Panchayat. It has helped them generate income and empowerment subsequently. They have supplied masks to many agencies during Covid-19 Pandemic, National flags during Har Ghar Thiranga campain and supplied uniforms to schools.

The GP president, Mr. Udaya kumar Shetty, needs a special mention here because of his exemplary leadership he has given for the development of the Village. He facilitated and oriented the team on all the initiatives taken up by the elected representatives and other stakeholders in the Panchayat.
