‘You are personally responsible for becoming more ethical than the society you grew up in’.- Eliezer Yudkowsky

School of Social Work started its first diploma programme in social work in the year 1960 with just three students. The college became a postgraduate centre for social work education in 1967, affiliated with the University of Mysore. This was in response to a perceived need among stakeholders to strengthen families and community bonding and the profound conviction of our founding principal, late Dr. Olinda Pereira. Today our college is recognized as one of the best colleges for social work education in the country and stands 12th in the India Today (dated 6th July 2020) ranking among best colleges for Social Work.

The ever-evolving post-graduate programme- Master of Social Work (MSW) curriculum has three important components such as theory, field practicum, and research. The theory helps the students to gain the necessary knowledge of social sciences and methods of social work. It also helps them in acquiring practical experience in social work research. To facilitate the learning process, the fieldwork training programme includes independent study, lectures, seminars, research with concurrent and block fieldwork sessions. The department works with several organisations including hospitals, industries, schools, and Non-Governmental Organisations for enhancing the field work experience of our students.

We consider education as a means for social change and transformation with societal commitment. Every year, a total of 120 students are enrolled in the MSW programme. The students are trained to plan and execute an array of activities in social service, social welfare, and also to work in commercial and industrial establishments. The MSW programme has its own best practices such as Academia- industry interaction wherein experienced professionals share their knowledge and expertise with the students. The department also has strong alumni spread across the world. The college offers three specializations in MSW namely

  • Community Development
  • Medical & Psychiatric Social work
  • Personnel Management & Industrial Relations
