Sociology is the mother of all social sciences. August Comte, a French sociologist is called the father of Sociology, as he was one of the first thinkers to discover that society could be understood by the application of scientific method. Sociology is the scientific study of social behavior and human groups. The subject matter of sociology is huge, complex and varied. Sociology provides a window to the wider world that lies beyond our immediate experience. It focuses primarily on the influence of social relationships upon people’s attitudes and behavior and on how societies are established and change.
Sociology began to emerge as a separate discipline only around the middle of the nineteenth century after the French revolution and since then it began to assume the scientific character that it has today. Sociology differs from other modes of understanding the social world. It relies on systematic observation of verifiable facts. Sociology provides a unique perspective towards understanding society. As PETER BERGES puts it ‘SOCIOLOGY IS A VERY SPECIAL KIND OF PASSION.
The course, in the first year, dwells on basic concepts and principles of sociology. In the second year, an understanding of Rural and Urban India is offered.
