The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) programme is being offered in Roshni Nilaya since 1986 and is aimed at training individuals desiring to work in the development field. Social work being an emerging profession provides ample job opportunities in service and voluntary sectors as well as government institutions.


The duration of study for the B. S. W. Degree extends over a period of three academic years divided into six semesters. The broad objectives of the course are:
•    To equip undergraduates with a set of educational, administrative and human skills and tools to analyze the environment and contribute creatively to its transformation.
•    To provide human-power to work at the grass root level in the field of Social development and welfare.
•    To provide first hand exposure to poverty and to women and child development efforts.

Social Work Practicum
The B. S. W. Course prepares students for professional practice in Social Work. Hence it includes a practicum or field practice which aims at enabling students to understand the relevance between theory and practice and to concretize the theory learned in the classroom.
Students are placed in various social welfare agencies, institutions, schools and communities, where they have opportunities of working with people by using the methods, skills and techniques learnt.

Career Options:  

The course provides the students basic skills of relating with people and their problems and prepares them to work in various settings. The course enables students to work in various social work agencies run by NGOs, government departments as well as corporate bodies.

The trained social work students can work in schools and special education institutions, child care institutions, de-addiction centres, hospitals and other health care centres, community and rural development agencies and government programmes and projects.

Faculty Objective:
To respond professionally to contemporary issues and challenges and growth of social work education.

Learner Objective:
 To develop knowledge and skills to deal with problems of individuals, groups and communities.

Admission Procedure:
1.    Applications for admission be made in the prescribed form and submitted along with attested copies of necessary documents including conduct and transfer certificates.
2.    All candidates from outside Karnataka should produce an eligibility certificate from the Mangalore University.
3.    Deserving students are offered fee concessions and scholarships.
